Supreme Court forms panel to address farmers’ issues; directs Punjab, Haryana to clear Shambhu border

The Supreme Court is taking steps to address the grievances of farmers by forming a multi-member committee for a permanent resolution. Punjab and Haryana governments are urged to meet with protesting farmers to clear the Shambhu border highway blockade since February 13. The court has requested both states to submit their action plan and results, with a further hearing set for September 2. The Punjab government reported progress in a meeting with farmers and agreed to partially open the blocked highway. The court has extended the status quo at the Shambhu border and granted Punjab government three days to propose more committee members. The court had previously directed DGPs of Punjab and Haryana to partially reopen roads for essential services. Both states were asked to suggest names for a committee to resolve the farmers’ issues. Haryana government filed a plea against a high court order to remove barricades at the Shambhu border near Ambala. Stay tuned for further updates on this ongoing issue.
