Supreme Court Agrees to Punjab Government’s Request for Omissions in Mubarak Sani Case Verdict
The Supreme Court has accepted the urgent application from the Punjab government to remove specific portions from the court’s July 24 revised verdict in the Mubarak Sani case after consulting with scholars. This decision follows a hearing on the Punjab government’s request to exclude certain sections from the judgment.
In February, the SC overturned the conviction of Mubarak Sani under the Punjab Holy Quran (Printing and Recording) (Amendment) Act. The court found that the accused’s offense was not criminalized until 2021, leading to his immediate release.
The verdict sparked controversy and backlash, resulting in the Punjab government challenging the decision. The court later clarified that the right to religious freedom is subject to law, morality, and public order, emphasizing the importance of faith in the finality of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
During a recent hearing, religious scholars and government officials presented their arguments, leading to the court accepting the Punjab government’s application for corrections in the judgment and prohibiting the use of expunged paragraphs as legal precedents in the future.
