Spain has dramatically increased its natural gas exports to Morocco, signaling a significant shift in its gas export strategy. In June 2024, Morocco accounted for 18.5% of Spain’s total gas exports, a massive increase from just 0.1% in June 2022. This surge can be attributed to diplomatic tensions between Algeria and Morocco, leading to the closure of a crucial pipeline in October 2021.
To meet Morocco’s energy needs, Spain has become a key supplier, sending over 9,300 gigawatt hours of natural gas through the Maghreb-Europe pipeline. This move has caused Spain to lessen its gas exports to Italy, with the Barcelona-Livorno pipeline experiencing a decline in share from 18.4% to 4.4% by June 2024.
Amidst concerns of Algeria threatening to cut gas supplies if any molecules reach Morocco, Spain reassures its commitment to Algiers while meeting Morocco’s energy demands. Italy, on the other hand, has secured new deals with Algeria directly and maintained high storage levels despite cuts in Russian gas supplies.
