Russian President Putin Claims Ukrainian Forces Attempted to Attack Kursk Nuclear Power Station
Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Ukrainian forces of attempting to attack the Kursk Nuclear Power Station in an overnight raid. Although Putin did not provide any evidence for his claim, he stated that Moscow has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about the alleged incident.
Ukraine has not responded to Russia’s allegations, but the ongoing conflict between the two countries has intensified. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has expressed that the attack on Kursk is part of an effort to end the war on terms favorable to Ukraine.
Despite the escalating tensions, Putin was assured by acting Kursk Governor Alexei Smirnov that the nuclear plant remains stable. This is not the first time that accusations of reckless attacks on nuclear facilities have been exchanged between Russia and Ukraine since the invasion began in February 2022.
The proximity of the conflict to the Kursk nuclear plant has raised concerns about the safety of the facility, prompting calls for restraint from the IAEA. The situation remains fluid as both sides continue to engage in combat near the critical infrastructure.
