Paraguay Partners with Meta to Combat Electoral Fake News
Paraguay’s Electoral Justice has taken a significant step in the fight against campaign misinformation by partnering with social media giant Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The agreement was forged during a meeting in Asunción as part of the XVII Inter-American Meeting of Electoral Authorities 2024 held on August 20-21.
Chief Justice César Rossel of Paraguay’s Superior Electoral Court (TSJE) highlighted the challenges posed by fake news and artificial intelligence in election campaigns. The TSJE aims to address these issues through strategic partnerships like the one with Meta. The signing ceremony included representatives from both parties and was part of a broader effort to combat disinformation in electoral processes.
The event, attended by representatives from 27 countries and supported by the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Canada, focused on promoting democracy and electoral integrity in the digital age.
