Panama Introduces Deportation Flights to China, India, and Ecuador to Curb Migration to US
Panama recently revealed its plans for deportation flights aimed at reducing the flow of migrants heading to the United States. President Jose Mulino announced the initiative, which includes sending migrants to China, India, and Ecuador, during a press conference.
Funded by the US government, the deportation flights have already begun with a group of Colombian migrants being the first to be transported.
This move comes as the US prepares for its upcoming presidential election, where unauthorized migration has become a significant issue.
For years, migrants from South America have attempted to cross the perilous Darién Gap jungle connecting Colombia and Panama to reach the US. Details regarding the legal status of the migrants being flown to Ecuador and the two Asian countries have not been specified by Mulino.
Scheduled deportation flights include Ecuador on August 29, Colombia on August 30, and India on September 3. Additional flights to Colombia will also be conducted between August 24-30.
