Norwegian envoy exits South Sudan, reflects on experience

The outgoing Norwegian Ambassador Linken Nymann Berryman has delivered a powerful farewell message to the people of South Sudan, urging all parties to negotiate in peace for the betterment of their nation. In her address, she emphasized three key points: the importance of peaceful and credible elections, the proper use of public funds, and the freedom of women to participate in society on equal terms with men.

Ambassador Berryman stressed the need for parties to the Revitalized Agreement for Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) to engage in the Nairobi Tumaini Initiative and negotiate in good faith. She also highlighted the interconnection between peace and economic stability, urging the government to prioritize Public Financial Management reforms to combat corruption.

The ambassador further emphasized the urgency of enacting legislations to protect women and girls from gender-based violence and forced child marriages, calling on all to be ambassadors for the women and girls of South Sudan. Ambassador Linken expressed her deep respect for the people she met during her time in South Sudan and highlighted the longstanding friendly relationship between Norway and South Sudan dating back to significant peace processes in the country’s history.
