Nepal lifts TikTok ban for disrupting social harmony

Nepal’s government lifted the ban on TikTok due to disrupting “social harmony” last November. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting initiated by Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, emphasizing equal treatment for all social networking sites.

The previous government imposed the ban to regulate TikTok’s use, citing disruption of social harmony and diffusion of indecent materials. The new government also mandated social media platforms to register in Nepal, open liaison offices, pay taxes, and comply with laws.

Despite concerns about TikTok’s data security due to its Chinese ownership by ByteDance, countries like the US, UK, and New Zealand have banned the app on government phones. Nepal had previously banned all pornographic sites in 2018.
