Morocco Ranks Ninth in Global Climate Performance Index
In the 2024 Climate Performance Index (CCPI), Morocco has secured the ninth spot, showcasing its significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, and promoting renewable energy initiatives. The CCPI, compiled by Germanwatch, Réseau Action Climat, and the NewClimate Institute, evaluates countries’ efforts in combating climate change by considering factors such as greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, climate policies, and development of renewable energies.
While Morocco has excelled in reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency, there is room for improvement in renewable energy and climate policies. Despite a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45.5% by 2030, the country still heavily relies on fossil fuels. Experts suggest transitioning to solar and wind energy projects, improving irrigation systems, and promoting sustainable agriculture to address these challenges and further reduce fossil fuel consumption.
Recognized as a key player in the international climate arena, Morocco is urged to strengthen domestic policies to protect ecosystems and reduce fossil fuel use.
