After an 11-day strike by resident doctors in several states over the rape-murder of a trainee medic in Kolkata, the Supreme Court’s appeal led to the end of protests. While major doctors’ bodies called off the strike, junior doctors in West Bengal continued their cease-work for the 14th day. In Delhi, doctors at top hospitals like AIIMS and RML also ended their strike.
The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) and the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) decided to call off the protests following the apex court’s directions on doctors’ safety. Patients, who faced difficulties due to the closure of outpatient departments, will now have access to regular medical care as services resume.
In Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh, junior doctors at hospitals also ended their strikes, resuming work based on assurances provided by the Supreme Court. Despite calling off the protests, doctors remain committed to advocating for justice for the victim and ensuring the safety of healthcare workers. The authorities at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) plan to resume all elective services promptly.
