Following an 11-day strike by doctors in India in response to a trainee medic’s brutal rape and murder, the Supreme Court has urged medical professionals to return to work, promising safety measures within two weeks.
While some doctors have already resumed duties, protests persist in Kolkata over the recent fatal sexual assault at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Doctors nationwide halted non-emergency services, demanding increased safety in healthcare facilities and justice for the 31-year-old victim.
The Resident Doctors’ Association at various hospitals expressed readiness to end the strike in light of the court’s appeal and assurance of safety measures. The Supreme Court emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of healthcare workers and women, forming a national task force for recommendations.
Despite stricter laws implemented after the 2012 gang-rape in Delhi, sexual violence remains prevalent in India. Recent statistics show a 20% increase in reported rape cases, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety and legal enforcement to protect women in the country.
