Refugees from Ukraine’s Zakarpattia Oblast are facing eviction from shelters in Hungary after the government restricted housing assistance for those fleeing the country. The decree, effective since August 21, only allows subsidized housing for Ukrainians directly affected by active hostilities. This move has led to the eviction of 120 refugees, mostly Roma minorities from Zakarpattia, who were living in a government-supported shelter in Hungary.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has expressed concern over this decision, as up to 3,000 refugees may lose their housing rights. The Roma minority, many with dual Ukrainian-Hungarian citizenship, are at risk of losing their temporary protection in other EU countries. Despite hosting over 30,000 Ukrainian refugees, Hungary recently eased entry requirements for Russian and Belorussian citizens.
