Amidst a raging civil war in Sudan, food deliveries to the famine-threatened Darfur region have resumed following the reopening of a crucial border crossing after six months of closure by Sudanese authorities. The United Nations food agency confirmed the arrival of the first convoy of trucks laden with essential food supplies from Chad through the reopened Adre border.
These supplies are designated for 13,000 people in Darfur facing imminent famine. The World Food Programme (WFP) stated that they have food and nutrition supplies for approximately 500,000 people ready to be transported swiftly through the newly re-opened route.
The conflict has displaced over 10 million people and claimed at least 18,000 lives since April 2023. More than half of Sudan’s population is now facing acute hunger, as reported by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Last week, the Sudanese government agreed to open key border crossings for humanitarian aid following international pressure.
According to the UN OCHA, 26 million people in Sudan require assistance, highlighting the dire humanitarian crisis affecting over half of the country’s population.
