Stranded Foreign Scholars Appeal to President Bola Tinubu Over Withheld Allowances

Foreign scholars under the Federal Government’s Bilateral Educational Agreement scholarship are in distress as their 14-month allowances have been withheld. In a letter dated August 20, 2024, signed by scholars from various countries including Hungary, Morocco, China, and others, they appealed to President Bola Tinubu for help.

The scholars, who participate in an education exchange program between Nigeria and partnering countries, are facing financial hardship due to the non-payment of their allowances. The Federal Scholarship Board, under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Education, oversees the scholarship program.

Despite promises from the Ministry of Education to pay the outstanding allowances, the scholars continue to suffer, with some resorting to extreme measures to survive. The scholars emphasized the critical need for timely payment to avoid further financial crisis and academic struggle.

It is imperative for the government to prioritize the welfare of these scholars, who represent the future of the nation’s education system. Delaying their stipends not only hinders their academic progress but also jeopardizes their well-being.
