Florida quietly removes LGBTQ+ tourism info from state site

Florida, known for popular LGBTQ+ tourist destinations like Key West and Fort Lauderdale, faced criticism as its tourism marketing agency quietly removed the “LGBTQ Travel” section from its website. This move, seen as erasure by LGBTQ+ business owners, follows controversial measures by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, including banning LGBTQ+ classroom instruction and gender-affirming care for minors.

Despite the removal, LGBTQ+-friendly listings can still be found on Visit Florida’s website. The state-funded agency plays a crucial role in Florida’s $102 billion tourism industry, attracting over 141 million visitors annually. However, the recent changes have led to concerns among LGBTQ+ advocates and potential travelers.

Keith Blackburn, of the Greater Fort Lauderdale LGBT Chamber of Commerce, expressed dismay over the situation, which complicates promoting South Florida tourism. Despite state-level policies, many Florida cities remain inclusive, with LGBTQ+ representation in government and business.

While some groups have called for a Florida travel advisory, Blackburn emphasizes the importance of highlighting the state’s welcoming communities amid controversial state actions.

As debates continue, the future of LGBTQ+ tourism in Florida remains uncertain, with implications for both travelers and the state’s economy.
