Severe flooding in India’s northeast and Bangladesh’s eastern region has left hundreds of thousands stranded, with at least 15 reported deaths as rescuers struggle to reach those in need, officials and media sources confirmed.
Heavy rains and mudslides in India’s Tripura state have claimed the lives of 11 people and displaced thousands. In Bangladesh, four more fatalities have been reported, exacerbated by shared rivers between the two countries.
The situation in Tripura prompted a red alert and the closure of schools, with over 300 relief camps opened to assist those affected. In Bangladesh, rising waters from upstream have devastated many areas, with residents calling for rescue as power and road links are cut off.
While authorities have begun rescue operations and relief efforts in both countries, many Bangladeshis blame India for the floods, alleging that a river dam in Tripura was opened causing sudden flooding. Monsoon rains, common in both nations, typically begin in June.
