The Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, expressed concern over the impact of floods, affecting over 40,000 households in the state this year. He highlighted that twenty-three out of twenty-seven local government areas in Jigawa were severely affected by floods.
An oversight visit by the House of Representatives committee on ecological funds to the flood victims in Jigawa attributed the recurring flooding to climate change, deforestation, and land degradation. The Chairman of the committee, Aminu Jaji, emphasized the need for sustainable land management practices and climate change control measures in the state.
The Governor, appreciative of the committee’s visit, shared that 7000 houses were destroyed, 6500 farmlands were damaged, and close to 8000 people were displaced by the floods. He also mentioned the state government’s initiative of planting 5.5 million trees to mitigate the impact of future disasters.
The Governor urged the committee to assist the people of Jigawa with measures to safeguard their environment and alleviate the suffering caused by the flood disaster.
