More than half a million individuals have sought compensation from the US military due to contaminated water at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, leading to various health issues such as kidney cancer, bladder cancer, and leukemia between 1953 and 1987.
The US Navy has received over 546,500 claims for compensation, with additional claims expected after review. The deadline for administrative claims was August 10, set by the Camp Lejeune Justice Act.
The Navy is dedicated to resolving the claims fairly and promptly. To date, over 2,000 lawsuits have been filed in a federal court in North Carolina, with trials likely starting next year.
In comparison to the 3M earplugs scandal, where the company paid $6.01 billion to settle claims, the Camp Lejeune water case could become the largest claim in history. The 3M case involved protective equipment causing hearing loss to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2001 and 2015.
