A European man who arrived in Thailand from Africa has tested positive for a suspected case of mpox and is currently being quarantined in a hospital.
Thailand’s Department of Disease Control confirmed the 66-year-old patient’s arrival on August 14 and is awaiting test results to determine the specific strain of the virus. While the country has previously detected mpox Clade 2 cases, this potential Clade 1 variant has raised global concern due to its increased transmissibility.
The infected individual had transited through a Middle Eastern country before arriving in Thailand. No details about the patient’s specific African origin or the transit country have been disclosed.
As mpox outbreaks continue in several African nations, the United Nations International Organization for Migration has appealed for funds to provide healthcare assistance in the affected regions. In Argentina, a suspected mpox case on a cargo ship has prompted health authorities to quarantine the vessel.
WHO reports indicate that Clade 1b of mpox, a more deadly strain, is responsible for recent spikes in cases, causing about 3.6 percent fatality rate with children being more vulnerable.
