The Taliban Continues to Block UN Human Rights Rapporteur
The Taliban’s administration has recently prevented United Nations-appointed special rapporteur, Richard Bennett, from entering Afghanistan. Accusing the human rights watchdog of “spreading propaganda”, the Taliban barred Bennett from monitoring the country’s human rights situation after they took control in 2021.
Bennett, who has previously criticized the Taliban’s treatment of women and girls, has been based outside Afghanistan but has visited the country multiple times to conduct research.
The UN Human Rights Council has not yet responded to the situation, and Bennett himself has not been reachable for comment. The Taliban spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi stated to Reuters that Bennett was unable to obtain a travel visa to Afghanistan due to his alleged biased reports.
Despite the Taliban’s claim to respecting women’s rights, they have faced international criticism for their stance, especially on girls’ education and women’s freedoms. The Taliban’s lack of recognition by foreign governments underscores the ongoing challenges they face regarding human rights.
The UN continues to seek a unified international approach in engaging with the Taliban, with a focus on monitoring and reporting on human rights issues within Afghanistan.
