The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has announced a proposed drug test policy for admission seekers and students to provide support for those struggling with substance abuse. In an interview with Channels Television’s Morning Brief, the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, emphasized that the primary objective is to identify and help individuals affected by drug use. The approach focuses on deterrence, early intervention, counseling, and treatment to prevent addiction or dependence.
The agency works with institutions to ensure that those who test positive for drugs are not expelled but taken for treatment and reintegrated into their academic pursuits. Babafemi highlighted the availability of counseling and treatment centers nationwide, along with the option of using authentic test kits at home to detect substance abuse.
The cost of the test kits ranges from N5,000 to N10,000, with free services provided by the agency. The NDLEA commander in Kwara State, Hajia Fatima Abiola-Popoola, has also called for drug tests to be a requirement for admission into tertiary institutions to curb the rising numbers of drug users in the country. This proactive measure aims to prevent drug abuse and provide necessary support to those in need.
