Prior to his new role, Tkachenko served as the director of the Africa Department in the Russian Foreign Ministry. His appointment highlights Russia’s efforts to strengthen ties with African nations amidst Western challenges, notably due to the recent conflict in Ukraine.
The decision comes alongside Peter Mathuki’s appointment as Nairobi’s ambassador to Moscow. Mathuki, the former Secretary-General of the East African Community, faced allegations of corruption during his term. Despite these controversies, he was not impeached by the East African Legislative Assembly.
