Contrary to speculation, PTA clarified that they were not installing firewalls. Internet speeds have significantly decreased, causing difficulties for users in sending media and voice notes. The business community and ISPs blamed the government’s internet monitoring efforts for the slowdown, leading to economic losses.
The PTA Chairman, Retired Major General Hafeezur Rehman, explained in a meeting with the National Assembly that the internet slowdown was due to a faulty submarine cable, not a firewall. Lawmakers grilled him on various internet issues, questioning the ongoing problems, including TikTok shutdowns and speed degradation. The committee opposed social media bans and urged the government to prioritize 5G services.
While the LHC dismissed the government’s initial response to the internet slowdown petition, demanding a more detailed reply by the next hearing on August 27. The PTA chairman expressed hope that internet issues would be resolved soon.
