Petra joins Global Sustainable Tourism Council: Promoting responsible travel.

Petra City has recently joined the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), a significant milestone announced by Faris Breizat, Chief Commissioner of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA). This move aligns with the evolving trends in sustainable tourism, catering to travelers’ preferences for destinations that adhere to international sustainability standards. The decision also supports PDTRA’s tourism strategic plan (2021-2025) and complements Jordan’s vision of becoming a leading global tourist destination and a hub for filmmaking.

With the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), PDTRA is set to implement GSTC-approved sustainable tourism standards. This initiative includes training, qualification programs, awareness campaigns, and collaboration with international and local partners to enhance sustainability practices across various tourism sectors.

By embracing international standards, PDTRA aims to elevate Petra as a model for sustainable tourism, paving the way for a more responsible and resilient tourism industry in Jordan.
