The NCA’s initiative comes in response to a surge in reported cases, with detailed guides readily available online for criminals seeking to exploit vulnerable individuals. The Internet Watch Foundation has described sextortion as a significant trend, resulting in devastating consequences such as the tragic deaths of teenagers like Dinal De Alwis and Murray Dowey.
Organizations supporting victims are urging authorities to prioritize combating sextortion to prevent further tragedies. The IWF has noted a substantial increase in reports related to financial sextortion involving minors, highlighting the need for enhanced action and collaboration at both national and international levels.
Efforts to address the issue include collaboration with foreign law enforcement agencies, as exemplified by recent cases of extradition and charges brought against perpetrators.
