Russian officials successfully repelled a major drone attack launched by Ukraine on the capital Moscow, shooting down 11 drones in the largest attack since the war began in 2022. The escalation follows Ukraine’s deployment of thousands of soldiers into Russia’s Kursk region on Aug. 6.
While Ukraine has been conducting damaging drone attacks on oil refineries and airfields in Russia, major drone attacks on Moscow, home to over 21 million people, are less common. The Russian Defense Ministry reported destroying a total of 45 drones, with 11 shot down over Moscow.
The city of Podolsk in the Moscow region witnessed some of the drone destruction, as Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed on Telegram. Despite the intensity of the attack, Moscow’s defense systems successfully repelled all incoming UAVs.
As Russia makes advances in eastern Ukraine and battles against Ukraine’s incursion into the Kursk region, the drone attack on Moscow marks a significant and unsuccessful attempt by Kyiv to provoke Russia.
