Lai warns that China’s authoritarianism extends beyond Taiwan.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te issued a stark warning about China’s increasing authoritarianism, emphasizing that it poses a threat not only to Taiwan but to the entire democratic world. Addressing the Ketagalan Forum on Indo-Pacific security in Taipei, Lai urged democratic countries to join forces in order to counter China’s expansionist agenda.

With China claiming Taiwan as part of its territory and showing confidence in achieving reunification, Lai stressed that Taiwan is just one of Beijing’s targets. He emphasized the need for democratic nations to work together to uphold the rules-based international order and prevent the spread of authoritarianism.

Despite being labeled a “dangerous separatist” by China, Lai has expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with Beijing. However, talks have stalled since the election of his predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, who advocates for Taiwan’s sovereignty.

Amid escalating military and political pressure from China, Taiwan remains resolute in defending its sovereignty and promoting peace in the region. Lai emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait while also calling out China’s military expansionism in other regions.
