Government Minister seeks ban on mobile phones in secondary schools

Minister for Education Norma Foley is considering a ban on mobile phones in post-primary schools to reduce distractions and cyberbullying. Last year, the Department of Education published guidelines to promote smartphone-free childhoods. Ms. Foley stated that the government has engaged with mobile phone providers and social media platforms to address this issue.

Speaking at Ardscoil Rís in Dublin, she emphasized the negative impact of mobile phones on student learning and social interactions. While schools currently have policies on phone usage, the constant beeping and distractions hinder the educational environment. Ms. Foley aims to instill a culture of non-acceptance towards mobile phones in schools.

This proposed ban is part of a larger effort to create a focused and engaging learning environment for students. By working with schools, the government hopes to enhance the overall school experience and curb the negative effects of excessive phone usage.
