Expert urges FG, govs to make diabetes drugs affordable

An Endocrinologist at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Dr Olubiyi Adeshina, raised concerns about the escalating costs of diabetes medication in Nigeria, creating a significant financial burden on patients. At the Talabi Diabetes Centre 4th Annual Ogun Youth Diabetes Camp Closing Ceremony, he revealed that individuals with diabetes in Nigeria now need between N70,000 to N100,000 per month for medication, a cost many cannot afford. The surge in prices was attributed to the Naira’s depreciation, with insulin costs from N13,000 to N18,000, compared to the previous N6,000 to N8,000.

Adeshina highlighted the disparity in access to medication, mentioning how in countries like Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, and South Africa, diabetes patients receive insulin and monitoring devices for free. Participants shared challenges of living with Type 1 diabetes in Nigeria, including the expensive insulin pens, discrimination in schools, and the need for government intervention for affordable medication and accessibility.

The urgency for action was stressed, especially as many Nigerians face rising living costs. The Acting Director of the Talabi Diabetes Centre underlined the criticality of managing Type 1 diabetes to prevent severe complications. The event aimed to equip young participants with the necessary skills for a fulfilling life.
