Women farmers in northwest Ireland are advocating for gender equality in agriculture. Donegal ACRES organized a two-day event where women farmers gathered to share their experiences and discuss the changes needed to level the playing field in farming. Only 13% of women have land holder status in Ireland, highlighting the need for policy changes to support women in agriculture.
At the event, attendees discussed the challenges faced by female farmers, including low representation as farm holders, access to finance, and land. Success stories were also shared, with examples of increasing opportunities for women in farming.
Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue commended the efforts of ACRES Donegal Co-Operation Project in promoting female participation in farming. Ireland’s CAP Strategic Plan for 2023-2027 includes dedicated measures to support gender equality, such as a 60% TAMS grant rate for women farmers.
The event provided a platform for women farmers to have their voices heard and emphasized the importance of gender balance in the agri-food sector. By sharing experiences and expertise, women are working towards a more inclusive and equitable agricultural industry.
