China Hits EU With Dairy Subsidy Probe After Bloc’s Cheesy Move to Tariff Chinese EVs

Sputnik International

China struck back against Brussels’ looming EV tariff hike with an investigation into the bloc’s dairy export subsidies. The probe covers cheeses, milk, and cream worth €1.7 billion.

The EU’s tariff threats led China to investigate brandy, pork, and wine exports. France would face potential losses in these probes, while Ireland could be hit hardest with €423 million in dairy exports.

The EU’s move to impose tariffs on Chinese EVs prompted China to retaliate, threatening an escalating trade row. Europe’s EV supply chains heavily rely on Chinese batteries, with trade tensions rising between the two economic giants.

EU Foreign Policy chief Josep Borrell attempted to ease trade tensions, emphasizing the importance of avoiding a systemic rivalry despite differences. He also criticized the US for exacerbating trade tensions with China.
