The highly classified strategy, approved by President Joe Biden, aims to deter Russia, China, and North Korea.

China’s expanding nuclear arsenal, estimated to double to over 1,000 warheads by 2030, has prompted this shift in US policy. The updated guidance, issued earlier this year, reflects the evolving nuclear landscape involving multiple nuclear-armed adversaries. The US, with 5,550 warheads, and Russia, with 6,255 warheads, are key players in this global nuclear scenario.

This strategic revision comes amid heightened tensions between the US and NATO allies against China and Russia, with conflicts over Ukraine and Taiwan escalating. North Korea’s increased ballistic missile tests have also raised concerns. Both Moscow and Beijing have accused the US of instigating conflicts worldwide and clinging to a Cold War mentality.
