Gabon’s military ruler, General Brice Oligui Nguema, has forbidden government officials from leaving the country for their vacations, instead ordering them to spend their time off in Gabon to connect with locals. The decision, announced by government spokesperson Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi, aims to foster a deeper understanding of the needs and expectations of the Gabonese people. Exceptions to this rule will only be granted in cases of emergencies or health reasons with the president’s approval.
This directive comes as Gabon prepares to commemorate the Day of National Liberation on August 30, marking a year since former President Ali Bongo was overthrown in a military coup. General Nguema, who led the uprising, has since pledged to organize free and fair elections in 2025 to transition power back to civilian leadership. As the country gears up for a referendum on a new constitution, government members are barred from running for office in the upcoming elections.
