In a recent survey conducted by Han-Gil Research, it was revealed that 7 out of 10 Koreans believe that the appointment of Kim Hyeong-seok as the head of the Independence Hall is controversial and should be reconsidered or revoked. The survey, conducted among 1,025 adults aged 18 and above, showed that 68.8% of respondents think that the appointment should be either reconsidered (12.9%) or revoked (55.9%).
The controversy stems from Kim Hyeong-seok’s past statements and actions, which have been viewed as sympathetic to pro-Japanese collaborators. As a result, calls for his resignation or reconsideration of his appointment have been growing, especially among progressive and centrist political groups.
Kim Hyeong-seok’s controversial views on Korean history, including downplaying the efforts to uncover the truth behind historical events like the Gwangju Uprising and the Jeju Massacre, have further fueled the public’s discontent. As pressure mounts for his resignation, it remains to be seen how this issue will unfold in the coming days.
