US Treasury Department says Michel Joseph Martelly ‘abused his influence’ to facilitate drug trafficking to the US.
The United States has imposed sanctions on former Haitian President Michel Joseph Martelly for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking, exacerbating the ongoing crisis in the country. The US Treasury Department declared that Martelly misused his authority to aid in the trafficking of dangerous drugs, such as cocaine, destined for the United States.
During his presidency from 2011 to 2016, Martelly reportedly collaborated with Haitian drug traffickers, supported various criminal organizations, and engaged in money laundering activities related to illicit drug proceeds. The Treasury Department underscored Martelly’s detrimental impact on Haiti’s stability, along with other corrupt political figures.
The sanctions against Martelly freeze his US assets and prohibit Americans from engaging with him. This action aligns with similar measures taken by the Canadian government in 2022, targeting Martelly and other former officials accused of profiting from criminal activities.
Haiti has faced escalating gang violence, particularly following the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry in February. International efforts, including the deployment of Kenyan police officers, aim to restore stability in a country plagued by social, political, and economic turmoil.
Gang conflicts have displaced hundreds of thousands of Haitians, while a significant portion of the population experiences severe food insecurity. The United Nations estimates that nearly 5 million Haitians are at risk of starvation, underscoring the urgent need for intervention in the impoverished nation.
