The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, stated that the United States has no authority to intervene in maritime disputes between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea. This came as a response to U.S. criticism of China’s actions after two Philippine Coast Guard vessels entered waters near Xianbin Jiao in China’s Nansha Qundao without authorization.
Mao emphasized that it was the Philippines who first violated China’s rights, and China acted lawfully to protect its territorial sovereignty and maritime interests. She asserted that the U.S., being a non-party to the issue, should not interfere in China-Philippines maritime affairs using the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty as a justification.
Mao urged the United States to cease provoking disputes and destabilizing the region, highlighting the importance of maintaining regional stability and reducing tensions in the South China Sea.
