UN official warns Iraq at risk of getting embroiled in war due to Gaza crisis

In recent months, tensions in Iraq have escalated as pro-Iran militias have targeted US forces in the country and neighboring Syria. The UN deputy special representative for Iraq, Claudio Cordone, warned of the country being pulled into a regional conflict it wants no part in, amidst rising tensions over Israeli assassinations in Beirut and Tehran.

Despite the Iraqi Prime Minister’s efforts to avoid being dragged into the conflict, attacks on US personnel by groups like Al-Thawiroun and the Islamic Resistance in Iraq have intensified. These militias have demanded the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq and have conducted retaliatory strikes against US bases.

Meanwhile, the IRI has announced drone attacks on Israeli targets in support of Gaza, further escalating tensions between Iran and its allies and Israel. Diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent further conflict, with calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and talks for the release of Israeli captives.

Cordone emphasized the need for de-escalation and a political solution to avoid further violence in the region, as regional actors navigate the delicate balance to prevent a full-scale war.
