UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani have emphasized the importance of de-escalating tensions in the Middle East, according to a statement from the Qatari Foreign Ministry.
They discussed ongoing developments in the Gaza Strip, particularly focusing on joint mediation efforts to bring an end to the conflict. Guterres commended Qatar for its continuous endeavors to find a just and lasting solution to the Palestine issue.
Despite previous mediation attempts, a lasting ceasefire agreement has not been achieved. Recent negotiations in Doha have shown promising progress, with Israel expressing gratitude for the mediation efforts.
However, Hamas remains skeptical, accusing Israel of introducing new conditions and questioning the outcome of the talks. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will be meeting with Israeli leaders to further discuss the situation before visiting Egypt.
Tragically, Gaza-based health authorities reported numerous casualties as violence continues to escalate, highlighting the urgent need for peace and de-escalation in the region.
