In the village of al-Nayrab in northwestern Syria, a group of men have adopted a new routine in response to the threat of explosive-laden drones that have plagued their community for almost a year. These men now set out early every morning with their hunting rifles to keep watch over the sky for any approaching drones.
Originally used for hunting and protection against wild animals, the rifles are now used as a means of defense against the drones that have become a frequent danger in the area. The Syrian government introduced armed drones to the conflict in late 2023, resulting in numerous drone attacks on both military and civilian targets.
Despite the risks, the villagers of al-Nayrab have managed to shoot down some of the drones that targeted their community. With over 60 drone attacks reported in neighboring villages, including casualties and destruction, the threat posed by these drones is a cause for alarm.
The impact of the drone attacks has taken a toll on the livelihoods of those living in the targeted areas, causing destruction to farmland, homes, and local businesses. The financial burden of these attacks has been heavy, with residents like Hussein al-Ali facing significant costs to repair the damage inflicted on their property.
