Sudan’s government is sending a delegation to Cairo for talks with U.S. and Egyptian officials to discuss participation in peace talks to end a 16-month war. The government, led by the army in conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), demands implementation of a previous agreement before joining talks in Switzerland.
The ongoing U.S.-led talks, attended by the RSF, aim to halt the war that began in April 2023 and alleviate the humanitarian crisis affecting half of Sudan’s 50 million population. The delegation’s Cairo visit follows discussions with the U.S. special envoy and Egypt, focusing on implementing the Jeddah agreement for RSF withdrawal from civilian areas.
The government awaits responses from U.S. and Saudi mediators to proceed with talks. Concerns over the UAE’s alleged support for RSF and the army’s recent decision to allow aid deliveries through an RSF-controlled border crossing are key issues in the negotiations.
