Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim Seeks BRICS Membership During New Delhi Visit
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is currently in New Delhi to discuss bilateral ties and to garner support for Malaysia’s application to join the BRICS alliance, as reported by Malaysian media. Anwar is set to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explore Malaysia’s accession into the bloc, founded by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, ahead of the leaders’ summit in Kazan this October. The informal group has been expanding rapidly, with new members such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
The visit will also focus on strengthening cooperation in various sectors, including digital, tourism, health, and renewable energy. Last year, bilateral trade between Malaysia and India reached nearly $20 billion, making Malaysia India’s 13th largest trading partner. This visit is expected to open new opportunities for collaboration in renewable energy and electric vehicles, according to Malaysian High Commissioner to India Datuk Muzafar Shah Mustafa.
Overall, Anwar’s visit aims to solidify bilateral ties and explore potential areas of cooperation during his trip to New Delhi.
