“Freedom of the press, freedom of speech really are under attack. The state is cracking down and escalating to try and stop people from speaking out against our government’s complicity in genocide.”
Syrian-British journalist Richard Medhurst was arrested and held under Section 12 of the UK Terrorism Act for 24 hours last week, he revealed on Tuesday.
Medhurst’s arrest included confiscation of his journalistic equipment and personal items, DNA and fingerprinting, and solitary confinement with constant surveillance.
His ordeal highlighted the challenges faced by journalists and the shrinking space for freedom of expression in the UK.
Despite the attempts to intimidate him, Medhurst remains committed to speaking out against government actions that contribute to human rights violations and atrocities.
