Empowering Polish Women: The Fight for Abortion Rights

In a powerful movement led by Anna Sikora, a left-wing activist from Sieradz, nearly 2,000 people joined protests in defense of women’s rights in Poland. These protests, mobilized against the Law and Justice party (PiS), successfully influenced the 2023 parliamentary elections. The restrictive abortion laws under the PiS government sparked outrage, particularly in cases like Izabela S., who tragically died after being denied a necessary procedure.

Abortion became a central issue during the election campaign, with promises made by Civic Platform leader Donald Tusk. However, changes to the law were ultimately rejected, leaving many disappointed. Despite new guidelines implemented by the National Public Prosecutor’s Office, legal experts remain skeptical of their impact on improving women’s safety and reproductive rights.

The fight for abortion rights in Poland continues, with activists like Sikora and legal experts pushing for meaningful change beyond superficial Band-Aid solutions. As Polish women demand justice and autonomy over their bodies, the battle for reproductive rights wages on.
