US government to support ‘necessary services’ for Afghans undergoing visa processing in Southeast Asian country.
The Philippines has agreed to host a “limited number” of Afghans being considered for resettlement in the United States, with the US providing support for necessary services during the visa processing in the country. This includes food, housing, security, medical, and transport, as stated by the US Department of State.
Both countries expressed appreciation for their longstanding cooperation, with the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs confirming that final domestic procedures are being completed for the agreement. While the specific number of Afghans to be processed in the Philippines was not disclosed, reports suggest around 300 applicants will be accommodated.
This collaboration comes amidst closer ties between the US and the Philippines under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, with the initiative being part of Operation Allies Welcome to relocate Afghan allies who worked with the US government. While initially met with opposition due to security concerns, the tradition of accepting refugees in the Philippines remains a crucial factor in this decision.
