Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has granted pardons to nearly 4,800 individuals involved in illegal cannabis cultivation, aiming to support farmers and promote the legal cultivation of cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes in the Rif region.
In an effort to improve the livelihoods of farmers, the move is seen as a step towards eliminating illicit cultivation and encouraging participation in the legal cannabis industry. The North African country, known as the world’s largest cannabis producer, adopted a law in 2021 to legalize cannabis cultivation in specific regions.
This groundbreaking initiative by the Moroccan government is expected to benefit thousands of families who rely on cannabis farming for income. The law also aims to combat illegal drug trafficking and monopolies within the industry.
With the establishment of Anrac and the increase in cannabis-related licenses, Morocco is making strides towards a regulated and sustainable cannabis industry. Despite maintaining a ban on recreational cannabis use, the country remains a key player in Europe’s illicit cannabis market.
