Organised Labour is urging Nigerians to exercise patience with the delay in implementing the new minimum wage by the Federal and State Governments. The Deputy President of Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission assured that there was no deliberate attempt to avoid paying the new wage.
President Bola Tinubu signed the new minimum wage into law after meetings with Labour leaders. Only seven states have set up implementation committees for the N70,000 minimum wage, with Lagos and Edo claiming to have started payment. Adamawa recently joined the list of states willing to pay the new wage.
Despite the delays, the Labour leader remains optimistic that the process will be completed by the end of August. He emphasized the complexity of the consequential adjustment process involved in implementing the new wage but expects it to be finalized soon.
