Kishida to visit U.S. before stepping down

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is planning a final overseas trip to New York to deliver a speech at the U.N. General Assembly before stepping down. Kishida recently announced his decision not to seek reelection in the upcoming leadership election.

During his visit, Kishida will hold bilateral meetings with U.S. President Joe Biden and other global leaders. He is also expected to participate in a summit with the Quad countries – Japan, the U.S., Australia, and India – and attend discussions on a proposed Fissile Material Cutoff Treaty.

This trip mirrors the actions of Kishida’s predecessor, Yoshihide Suga, who visited Washington for a Quad summit before his own resignation. The visit to New York is a fitting conclusion to Kishida’s term as Prime Minister and a chance to engage in crucial global discussions.
