Japan to intensify fight against child poverty

The government is intensifying efforts to combat child poverty by establishing a new working group this autumn. This group, formed under a subcommittee of the children and families council, will focus on analyzing current initiatives and enhancing measures to support children in need.

Experts in the subcommittee will collaborate to address issues such as local government assistance for children’s cafeterias, educational support, and creating safe environments for children. Their goal is to strengthen efforts to eliminate child poverty and gather input from local governments for effective solutions.

Furthermore, a separate working group is being considered to support single-parent families following a Civil Code revision allowing post-divorce joint custody. The group will address concerns such as securing child-support payments and preventing domestic violence within these families.

By mobilizing experts and policymakers, the government aims to expand its support network for vulnerable children and families, ensuring a brighter future for all.
