Israeli Finance Minister Plans New Settlement in Bethlehem
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has announced plans to establish a new settlement in Bethlehem, seizing land from Palestinians to connect the illegal Gush Etzion settlement to Jerusalem. The new settlement, named “Nahal Heletz,” will create an isolated area deep inside Palestinian territories, increasing frictions and security challenges. This move defies the UNESCO Convention and poses a threat to the Christian presence in the region.
Historian William Dalrymple expressed concern over the destruction of one of the last Christian strongholds in the West Bank by Israeli settlers. The Kisiyye family, residents of Al-Mahrur Valley, have been fighting against Israel’s colonial activities, with Israeli authorities demolishing their homes and businesses. Despite a court ruling in their favor, the family faces ongoing threats from Israeli settlers supported by the government.
Anti-settlement activist Jamil Kassas highlighted the impact of the new settlement on Bethlehem, isolating the area from surrounding regions. He called on Palestinians to unite against colonial settlement activities to protect their land, emphasizing its essential role in their lives.
