Iran Accused of Hacking Trump Campaign in Attempt to Influence 2024 Election
Recent reports from US security agencies have revealed that Iran was behind a hack targeting Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, with the intention of influencing the upcoming 2024 election. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, and CISA confirmed the cyber attack on the Trump campaign, attributing it to Iran.
Iran’s UN mission denied any involvement in the hacking and challenged the US government to provide evidence for their claims. Both Trump and Democratic rival Kamala Harris’s campaigns have reported being targeted by cyber attacks, with US-based tech companies also detecting such activities.
The US intelligence community stated that Iran used social engineering and other tactics to target individuals in both campaigns, aiming to influence the election process. Trump’s campaign spokesperson blamed “foreign sources” for the hack, alleging that the materials obtained were intended to interfere with the democratic process.
In a separate incident, Harris’s campaign also reported being targeted by foreign hackers, although the country behind the attack was not disclosed. Google’s threat analysis group identified APT42, linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, attempting to compromise personal accounts of individuals affiliated with the presidential campaigns.
As the US heads into the 2024 election, these cyber attacks highlight the importance of cybersecurity and vigilance in protecting democratic processes from external interference.
